Dave Paul is a Master Faculty Specialist and Chair of the Philosophy Department at Western Michigan University. Over more than 30 years, he has taught over 175 courses to more than 6,800 students at WMU, including 65 sections of biomedical ethics reaching over 3,000 students—a standout area of his teaching. Additionally, Paul has taught more than 600 students in over 50 courses at five other universities and community colleges, as well as hundreds of high school students at two high schools.
Paul’s teaching emphasizes innovation and inclusivity, such as fostering intergenerational dialogue by inviting retirees from the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) into his undergraduate courses. Recently, Paul has begun teaching courses on artificial intelligence and has collaborated with WMU’s Office of Faculty Development to share his work, including with researchers beyond the university. He has combined these two interests into new modules on AI in healthcare for his biomedical ethics students.
Paul has served on Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees (IACUCs) in both the private and public sector for over a decade and has represented organizations at conferences such as PRIM&R (Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research).
