Boren Awards - WMU Campus Deadline
Introduction
Boren Awards are a set of merit-based scholarships and fellowships funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP) that encourage U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study in areas of the world critical to U.S. national security. These awards prioritize the study of languages and cultures that are underrepresented in study abroad and are deemed important for national security.
Overview
Undergraduate applicants for the Boren Scholarship must submit complete draft materials for internal review by the first Monday of WMU’s spring term, January 12, 2026. WMU’s campus review process offers one-on-one advising on language-study plans, workshops on crafting a competitive statement of purpose, and feedback on letters of recommendation and transcripts (Western Michigan University, n.d.).
How to Apply
Send your draft materials as a single PDF via email to Dr. Michelle Metro-Roland, Fulbright & Scholarship Liaison:
- Draft personal statement with language-study justification
- Current curriculum vitae
- List of proposed references
- Unofficial transcripts
Dr. Metro-Roland will coordinate WMU’s internal review and provide guidance on strengthening your Boren application.
