Join the Fun at the 2026 White Cane 5K

MidWest Enterprises for the Blind (MWEB), together with Western Michigan University’s College of Health and Human Services Department of Blindness and Low Vision Studies, invites individuals, families and community members of all ages and abilities to participate in the 2026 White Cane 5K.

This family-friendly event brings the community together for a day of fun, connection and inclusion while raising awareness of the white cane as an important symbol of independence for people who are blind or have low vision. Whether you run, walk, volunteer or cheer from the sidelines, everyone is welcome to participate.

Michigan was a pioneer in white cane awareness, establishing its first white cane safety laws in 1937. The movement gained national prominence in 1964 through a presidential proclamation by Lyndon B. Johnson designating Oct. 15 as White Cane Safety Day. In 2011, President Barack Obama further commemorated the day as Blind Americans Equity Day.

Now in its third year, the White Cane 5K brings community partners together to highlight the vital contributions and rights of individuals who are blind or have low vision across Kalamazoo.

Proceeds will be donated to the Michigan Foundation for the Blind and Visually Impaired (MFBVI) to purchase white canes for individuals in need.
