International Student Orientation

Congratulations on your admission to Western Michigan University! Our International Student Orientation is designed to help you make a smooth transition academically, socially, geographically and professionally to WMU. Orientation consists of two parts: a virtual portion to complete before your arrival in the United States, and an in-person campus event at the beginning of your first semester. There, you will receive a university welcome, meet immigration advisors, make new friends and more.

"More than anything, WMU gave me the chance to grow—personally and professionally. From supportive professors to campus mentors, I’ve had a network that challenged me to think critically and pushed me to step outside my comfort zone. I now feel ready to take on what comes next, even if I’m still figuring out the exact path. I know that the foundation I built here will help guide me forward."
— Elfriede Rumaseuw, 2025 Graduate from Indonesia

ISO is a standard practice at American universities. During both the virtual modules and in-person event, you will receive information and resources to help you navigate your new campus environment. This includes details about the university's policies and procedures, as well information about academic programs and local resources.

ISO is an opportunity for you to meet your peers and make new friends from diverse countries and cultures.

Moving to a new country can be a challenging and overwhelming experience. However, ISO can help ease this transition by providing opportunities to learn about the local culture, customs and expectations.

ISO serves as an introduction to the support systems available to students at Western Michigan University, such as student services, counseling and advising.

Students attending in-person orientation will be provided with a free SIM card and one free month of 5G cell phone service with unlimited phone and SMS texting via campusSIM and T-Mobile. Most Americans use SMS texting instead of WhatsApp or another messaging service, so this may prove valuable as you connect with new people and make friends in Kalamazoo.

  • eSIMs: If your phone supports eSIMs, you can get set up before you even leave home. We recommend visiting this WMU-specific link to choose a plan, pay and receive your U.S. phone number. You can then delay activation until you arrive in the United States. Note: eSIMs do not include a free month of service.
  • Physical SIMs: These include one free month of service and are compatible with most phones. You can pick one up at International Student Orientation.
