Alumnus recognized with first Public Sector Leader Award
Former chief of staff to Michigan's senior senator Debbie Stabenow (2001-2005), Matt VanKuiken, received WMU's Public Sector Leader Award. Created to celebrate individuals who embody excellence, command widespread respect, provide inspiration to young leaders, and offer selfless dedication to public service, VanKuiken was the inaugural recipient.
"Matt's hard work for U.S. Senator Stabenow and for the people of Michigan exemplify these qualities in abundance," says WMU President Edward Montgomery.
A graduate of the College of Arts and Sciences Department of Political Science, VanKuiken managed the daily operations of Stabenow's office. He was responsible for implementing her priorities and served as the primary contact for businesses, advocacy groups, trade organizations, and nonprofits regarding legislative issues and navigating federal agencies. Prior to his role as chief-of-staff, VanKuiken served as Stabenow's legislative director and senior policy advisor.
While at WMU, VanKuiken participated in the Capital Intern Program, in which students assigned to state representatives, senators, lobbyists and various officials travel to Lansing to attend session meetings, help research and draft legislation, and work directly with constituents.
President Montgomery says VanKuiken is a great example of how that program prepares national leaders. "From Lansing to Washington, Matt demonstrated that he can lead and inspire a large team in turbulent times" he says. "Time after time, Senator Stabenow turned to Matt as her most senior advisor. On both sides of the aisle, he has earned respect and admiration during these most polarizing times."
President Montgomery says VanKuiken set the bar high for the award in its inaugural year, "This is a well-deserved honor. Matt's name will always be the first on the Public Sector Leader Award list of recipients."
