International student builds research acumen in the M.S. in Finance program at WMU
KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Mihail Naskovski is an accomplished student, professional and researcher who doesn’t shy away from a challenge. Completing the Master of Science in Finance program at WMU Haworth prepared him with a deep understanding of finance theory and research skills that he’s using while he pursues a Ph.D.
Originally from the Republic of North Macedonia, Naskovski came to the United States to earn his undergraduate degree in economics at Kalamazoo College. He discovered a love for research while completing his senior thesis, ultimately achieving the milestone of publishing his findings in the Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Politics, Economics and World Affairs.
His career at Tegus postgraduation was where his research interests and economics background started to connect as he consulted with private equity and venture capital firms.
“I found finance to be this overlapping science of rigorous quantitative analysis on one end and day-to-day, real-life execution of business initiatives on another. I wanted to build a deeper understanding of corporate finance theory and empirical research and equity research, as well as financial planning, analysis and decision making.”
Naskovski knew he wanted to increase his knowledge in finance and hone his research skills at the same time, and the Master of Science in Finance program was the perfect next step. He says, “It offered a comprehensive curriculum that developed my capabilities in corporate finance, financial econometrics and data analytics, while providing me the chance to continue supporting academic research and develop investment research skills.”
He was able to put those research skills into practice by working as a graduate research assistant on projects with faculty in the Department of Finance and Commercial Law, including Dr. Matt Ross, Dr. David Burnie and Dr. Zag Davaadorj.
Dr. Matt Ross, associate professor of finance, served as a mentor to Naskovski and says, “Mihail is the most capable student researcher I have worked with in my decade as a faculty member. He is not only thorough and conscientious, but also insightful. Within his first few weeks working on the joint project with Dr. Davaadorj and me, he was already finding ways to better capture key data. His attention to detail and persistence over months of this research project is highly commendable.”
Naskovski is now pursuing a Ph.D. at Drexel University, where he’s building on the skills and knowledge gained in the graduate program.
“The M.S. in Finance was excellent preparation for pursuing an academic career. My time at WMU Haworth gave me invaluable opportunities for professional growth and development in addition to academics. I’m thankful to all the faculty members and staff that helped me during the program and Ph.D. application process.”
