Dr. Heather Petcovic currently serves as Chair of the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences and holds a joint appointment as a professor in the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences and the Mallinson Institute for Science Education.

Dr. Petcovic’s research broadly focuses on better understanding complex problem-solving in the geosciences. She uses qualitative and mixed methods of research to understand the role of outdoor field experiences in the transition from student to expert geoscientist. She has collaborated with cognitive scientists on multiple grant-funded projects investigating the role of spatial thinking in geological mapping, weather forecasting, and groundwater contamination investigations. Dr. Petcovic has also served on multiple grant-funded projects supporting faculty and K-12 teacher professional development.
