Student Spotlight: Ellie Lundy – Leading with Compassion and Communication

I’ve learned how to talk to everybody and be more out there and be myself. I’ve met lots of great, amazing people who can help me in the future.
Meet Ellie Lundy, a first-year doctoral student in Occupational Therapy at Western Michigan University (WMU), who’s making a difference both in and out of the classroom. Originally from Charlotte, Michigan, Ellie chose WMU for its top-tier occupational therapy program—and she’s already leaving her mark on campus.
A Leader at the Switchboard
Ellie serves as the Switchboard Student Lead in WMU’s Information Technology department. In this role, she’s the friendly voice behind the main university phone line, helping callers navigate everything from financial aid questions to housing concerns. She also manages scheduling, conducts peer interviews, and ensures the front desk is always welcoming and professional. Ellie sees the student operator team as the pre-questionnaire before people get to the department they need, and feels it’s about helping people feel heard and guided.
Building Skills for the Future
While her job may not directly relate to occupational therapy, Ellie views it as a vital part of her personal and professional growth. The position has led her to become more open, improve her communication, and develop leadership skills. These soft skills are essential for her future career as a pediatric occupational therapist, a path inspired by her upbringing and her mother’s work as a special education teacher.
Beyond the Desk
Outside of work and school, Ellie enjoys reading fantasy and young adult novels (yes, she’s a Harry Potter fan!), spending time with friends, and walking around campus. She also works as a nanny for children with disabilities—an experience that aligns beautifully with her passion for helping others. Ellis has always had a heart for people with different abilities, and it’s something that’s been part of my life since I was young.
Inspired by Family
Ellie credits her parents as her biggest influences. Her mom’s dedication to special education and her dad’s work in IT at GM have shaped her values and career aspirations. Mom and Dad have always encouraged her to help others and be herself.
Looking Ahead
Ellie’s future is bright. She’s focused on completing her doctorate and becoming a pediatric occupational therapist. As for where she’ll land after graduation? At the end of our interview, she smiled and said, "I’m just seeing where life takes me.”
