Experimental Archaeology Exhibition
During the 60th International Congress on Medieval Studies, we will be showcasing artisans and their work in experimental archaeology. They will have several recreated artifacts from early medieval England and Northern Europe. Our exhibitors will be Ken and Cynthia Koll of Nordik Kraft, George Carroll, and George Johnson. On display will be things such as artifacts from the seventh-century ship-burial site of Sutton Hoo, examples of early iron production, and everyday items such as utensils and game boards.
Ken and Cynthia Koll of Nordik Kraft specialize in Nordic and Celtic inspired bone, leather, horn, and wood reproductions and re-creations. Their exhibition will include everyday items one might find in an early medieval household in Northern Europe.
George Carroll's exhibition will feature examples of early iron production, as well as items that would have been produced using bloom iron and steel including a replication of the Osburg ship burial cauldron, with two early iron age cauldrons for some historical context.
George Johnson's exhibition showcases meticulously recreated artifacts of material culture discovered in the seventh century ship-burial site at Sutton Hoo. The objects which are on display are part of a full scale reconstructed burial chamber. They include the most noted items of the burial but also the large iron "standard" and dies to create the tiny gold Merovingian tremissis coins.
