WMU responds to Michigan House budget proposal for higher education
KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Western Michigan University offers the statement below in response to the budget proposal for higher education passed by the Michigan House of Representatives on Thursday, June 12.
We appreciate the proposal for a generous and historic funding increase for Western Michigan University and 12 other universities in the Michigan House of Representative's measure, thanks to the advocacy of WMU alumnus and House Speaker Matt Hall.
At the same time, we remain committed to a final budget that increases the overall investment in Michigan's higher education institutions. Policymakers must not jeopardize Michigan's long-term economic competitiveness and prosperity through a reduced investment in students that comprises the workforce of tomorrow.
We cannot support provisions, included in both the House or Senate budget versions, that mandate vague and unnecessary requirements, compromise academic freedom or put at risk our capacity to serve all students. WMU’s long-standing motto is “So that all may learn,” and we take pride in being a globally inclusive institution that mutually benefits our students and Michiganders.
We look forward to engaging with policymakers about necessary investments in our students and Michigan's economic future.
