Outreach
Members of the Western Michigan University Philosophy Department are involved in a wide range of outreach initiatives:
- Ethics Bowl - In conjunction with the Center for the Study of Ethics in Society, graduate students and faculty from the WMU Philosophy Department serve as coaches and mentors for two ethics bowl teams.
- Medical Humanities - The department supports a range of programming in the medical humanities, including an undergraduate minor, an annual conference, and a lecture series.
- Minorities and Philosophy - The students and faculty of the WMU Minorities in Philosophy chapter work to promote the research of minority and underrepresented groups in philosophy through a range of activities including regular reading groups, a speaker series, and an annual workshop.
- Higher Education for the Justice-Involved - Graduate students from the WMU Philosophy Department have developed the prison education program, Higher Education for the Justice Involved (HEJI). HEJI brings college-style courses to incarcerated individuals.
- Tax Assistance - Members of the Western Michigan Philosophy program participate in the Internal Revenue Service's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program in order to provide tax assistance services to Alaskans living in isolated villages.
