Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Western Michigan University’s Facilities Management uses GIS to map and manage campus assets—like utilities and landscape features—so our buildings and grounds are easier to maintain, safer and more efficient. GIS helps us visualize and analyze data to spot patterns and make informed decisions.
Our team combines in‑house expertise with partnerships across WMU and with public‑sector and private‑sector collaborators. This approach supports system inventories and condition assessments, and it helps us share easy‑to‑understand maps with campus stakeholders.
GIS at WMU has served the campus since 1998, growing from a student‑supported lab into a program that offers hands‑on project experience and professional‑level preparation while maintaining and improving our campus map data.
