Undergraduate programs and minors

Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences (B.S.)
If you're thinking about a career helping people with communication, the bachelor’s degree in speech, language and hearing sciences at WMU is a great place to start. It’s designed to prepare you for graduate school in speech-language pathology. But even if you don’t go to grad school, you’ll still learn a lot about how people communicate and how the brain works. This knowledge can lead to many different jobs, like working as a speech or hearing assistant, or in other areas where communication is key.

American Sign Language Studies (minor)
Many students take American Sign Language (ASL) to meet their Western Essential Studies requirements—and end up falling in love with it! ASL is a beautiful and expressive visual language that opens the door to a close-knit community of Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals. Learning ASL isn’t just about language—it’s about connection, culture and communication in a whole new way.

Speech Language Hearing Processes (minor)
In this minor, you’ll explore how people communicate and what happens when communication breaks down. You’ll learn about the science behind speech, language and hearing, including how the body and brain work together to make communication possible. It’s especially helpful for students planning careers in healthcare, like pre-med or pre-dentistry, because it adds valuable knowledge about human communication and disorders.

Graduate programs and certificates

Speech-Language Pathology (M.A.)
Western Michigan University’s two-year, full-time master’s program in speech-language pathology is designed to prepare you for a successful career in the field. Through hands-on clinical training and in-depth academic study, you’ll build the knowledge, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills needed to provide high-quality care and become a leader in a constantly evolving profession.

To earn your degree, you’ll complete all academic and clinical practicum requirements needed for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP).

Certificate in Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences (cert)
Launched in Fall 2022, this 17-credit certificate in speech, language and hearing sciences offers a structured path for students who need prerequisite coursework for graduate programs in speech-language pathology. It formalizes the post-baccalaureate course sequence and includes the essential classes required by many graduate schools in the field.

Please note: Completing this undergraduate certificate does not guarantee admission to graduate programs in speech-language pathology or audiology.
