ADHD Evaluation and Treatment
Students at Western Michigan University may have trouble focusing, getting organized or completing work at times of increased stress. There are many other factors that may also contribute to these issues including but not limited to substance abuse, depression, anxiety or other medical conditions. Please read the procedure below carefully. Questions may be sent to us using the contact form and choosing "medical concern" as the subject.
Sindecuse Health Center does not perform Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder testing or screening. Providers at the health center will only start or continue medications for patients with existing diagnoses from previous psychiatric testing. We require that you have record of testing done by a psychologist or neuropsychologist.
Psychological testing by an outside provide does not require a referral. Call the health center at (269) 387-3287 for a list of resources.
Sindecuse providers will not prescribe refills on ADHD medications given by providers outside of our health center.
To receive treatment for ADHD
The following requirements are considered standard of care at Sindecuse Health Center for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder treatment. These requirements must be met to continue evaluation or treatment while in our care.
- A previous diagnosis of ADHD by testing must be made by a psychologist or neurologist. These evaluations are comprehensive and typically take three to four hours to complete. Visit notes alone from a pediatrician, primary care provider, or other medical provider are not sufficient.
- Medical records supporting this diagnosis must be sent to Sindecuse Health Center (fax to (888) 979-8229), or bring them to your first appointment. Instructions for medical records transfer and a release of information form are found on our Medical Records page.
- Schedule an appointment after you have these materials in hand or sent to Sindecuse to begin the process. Our provider will evaluate you, review documentation, and order a drug screen (required of all controlled substances prescribed).
- A negative drug screen must be provided to continue further treament for ADHD symptoms. If the screen is positive, you may be asked to provide two subsequent negative screens and see a counselor regarding substance use. An exception may be granted to patients who hold a medical marijuana card.
- After discussion with the Sindecuse provider, you may be asked to see a psychiatrist for further evaluation of medication considerations. Visits to the Sindecuse psychiatrist are available only by referral from a health center provider.
- Yearly drug screens must be completed and random ones may be scheduled in order for Sindecuse providers to continue prescribing ADHD medication.
Prescription medications at Sindecuse
A patient must schedule an office visit to receive refills. Plan in advance to make appointments for uninterrupted care and prescription supplies.
Sindecuse Pharmacy fills controlled substance orders from outside providers for 30-day supplies of ADHD medications.

Students are encouraged to begin this transition well in advance of arriving at WMU since there are often a large number of requests to process.
