Advising

The College of Aviation Advising Office at Western Michigan University serves undergraduate students with majors focusing on aviation flight science, aviation technical operations, and aviation management and operations. Academic advisors aid students in choosing courses that will fulfill major and general education requirements. All questions concerning courses or class schedules should be directed to the advising office. Students should visit an academic advisor each semester to ensure they are fulfilling requirements and making progress toward graduation.

Applying to the aviation flight science program

Due to high demand, students apply for Aviation Flight Science must apply for the Fall semester and complete their applications by the established deadline to be considered for admission into the program. Admission decisions for students applying to the flight science program will be released after each deadline has passed. Students seeking re-admission will be reviewed on a case by case bases.  Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

The aviation flight science application will consist of the following review process and procedures:

  • A holistic review, using all sections of the application, including: academic transcript(s), extracurricular activities, honors and awards, essay, and any letters of recommendation.
  • Students who are not offered admission to aviation flight science but who are admissible to WMU will be offered admission into aviation management and operations, which is a non-flight degree.  Please note: Students offered admissions into aviation management and operations will be able to petition the College of Aviation to add/change their major into aviation flight science in December of each year.  Students will only be able to submit the petition during their first two years at the University.

A completed application, fee or waiver, and all required transcript(s) must be received by the following dates:

  • First-year application deadline: December 15. Admission decisions will be released mid-February.
  • Transfer application deadline: February 15. Admission decisions will be released mid-April.
  • For new students applying to WMU, your complete application must be received by December 15
  • For transfer students, your completed application must be submitted by February 15
  • Please note that no late or incomplete applications will be considered
We will conduct a holistic review of each applicant, considering much more than just academic qualifications. While strong performance in math and science courses is essential, you must have completed or be enrolled in pre-calculus and physics by the time of application. These courses are foundational for success in the Aviation Flight Science program. In addition to academic performance, we will also be looking for qualities such as leadership, dedication, perseverance, and a genuine passion for aviation. Extracurricular activities and your engagement with aviation—both inside and outside the classroom—will also play a significant role in your application.  Be prepared to demonstrate your commitment through essays and additional documentation that reflect who you are beyond just grades.
Additionally, as part of the application process, you will need to provide proof of your FAA Aviation Medical certification. At WMU, we require that students obtain at least a 2nd Class Medical, but we strongly encourage you to pursue a 1st Class Medical, as this is the medical certification you’ll need to fly professionally.
If, for any reason, you are not accepted into the Aviation Flight Science program, don’t be discouraged! We will offer you the opportunity to join our Aviation Management and Operations program, which provides another excellent pathway into the aviation industry. This is not a setback but rather a chance to grow and continue on your journey toward a rewarding career in aviation.
The aviation industry is demanding, and we want to ensure that you are well-prepared for the challenges that lie ahead. A successful application isn’t just about meeting the minimum requirements—it’s about showing your drive, your passion, and your readiness to be part of a future where aviation leaders like you will shape the skies.
Remember: perseverance and passion will set you apart, and the admissions process is just the first step in what promises to be an exciting and fulfilling career journey. Stay committed, stay focused, and use this process as an opportunity to showcase your dedication to the aviation profession.
